Zumi began as an idea to serve the healthiest food possible in a better way.
It all started because Patrick Burke was hungry. His grad school schedule was busy, his grad student budget was tight, and he was tired of schedule-and-budget-friendly food (apologies to the chicken-burger-pizza triumvirate).
Patrick fell in love with the natural health benefits and outstanding flavors of sushi. In the fall of 2006, even though it had nothing to do with the law degree that was keeping him so hungry, he determined to find a way to serve the highest quality sushi and the best of Japanese cuisine in an accessible way.
Patrick quickly discovered that he wasn’t the only person passionate about this idea. Everyone he talked to was excited—and the longer they talked, the hungrier they got. Patrick met Gary Flood, the famed sushi chef from Los Angeles, who had an uncanny knack for quality rolls and unique flavor creations. Before Gary’s untimely and unexpected death in 2008, he and Patrick developed many of the signature rolls now on Zumi’s menu. Gary’s impact on Zumi is still felt today.
After much tasty research (including a trip to Japan), countless hours of searching for the right location, and some creative genius to launch a new restaurant during the worst economic crisis in decades, Zumi opened its doors on May 12th, 2009 at 2119 Belcourt Avenue in Nashville’s historic Hillsboro Village. With a constantly-evolving menu and a commitment to being fast, fresh, and budget-friendly while providing the most outstanding flavors in sushi and Japanese cuisine, Zumi is situated to satisfy hunger for generations to come.

Respect for our schedules: Our goal is to fit into your lifestyle and be as versatile as you need us to be, from quick lunch breaks and takeout to leisurely dinner parties and catering. When you’re on the move, you can have a Japanese entrée or handmade, customized sushi roll in just a few minutes. And when you need a break or want to celebrate, our front and back decks provide a relaxing atmosphere for slowing down and savoring a full meal paired with sake, wine or beer from our carefully selected beverage list.
Respect for our bodies: Our culinary philosophy is that food is fuel for the body—and that fuel should be as fresh and flavorful as possible! We are passionate about sushi and Japanese cuisine in large part because of the health benefits, such as the way it makes us feel energized and ready to go rather than lethargic and over-full. We are committed to using fresh ingredients, adding no MSG, and steering clear of heavy preservatives so we can guarantee the best possible combination of delicious and healthy.
